5 Lessons at 50

Looking at my peak male physique, and my Keanu Reeves baby face, you would never suspect it, but I recently turned 50. As is the tradition, I thought about writing a post titled "50 Lessons at 50". Unfortunately, I don't have that kind of wisdom. The thing is, I still feel like I'm 18, same age as my son. Turns out this is the secret old guys have been hiding from us all along. You get older only on the outside, but inside you still see yourself as the same young lad. Still, fifty years should count for something. So what did I actually learn? How am I mentally different than my 18-year-old self. Here is my attempt to tally it up.  1. Caution is warranted I finally understand my parents. As you age, you accumulate battle scars, and the scars turn into habits. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. End of Productivity Theater

I remember the early 2010s as the golden age of productivity hacking. Lifehacker, 37signals, and their ilk were everywhere, and it felt like everyone was working on jury-rigging color-coded Moleskine task-trackers and web apps into the perfect Getting Things Done system. So recently I found myself wondering: what happened to all that excitement? Did I just outgrow the productivity movement, or did the movement itself lose stream? After poking around a bit, I think it's both. We collectively grew out of that phase, and productivity itself fundamentally changed. The Trap of Micro-Optimizations Back then, the underlying promise of productivity culture was about outputmaxxing (as we would now call it). We obsessed over efficiency at the margins: how to auto-sync this app with that one, or how to shave 5 seconds off an email reply. We accumulated systems, hacks, and integrations like collectors. Back in 2005, when I first joined the SUNY Buffalo CSE department, the department secretary was a wonderful lady named Joann, who was over 60. She explained that my travel reimbursement process was simple: I'd just hand her the receipts after my trip, she'd fill out the necessary forms, submit them to the university, and within a month, the reimbursement check would magically appear in my department mailbox. She handled this for every single faculty member, all while managing her regular secretarial duties. Honestly, despite the 30-day turnaround, it was the most seamless reimbursement experience I've ever had. But over time the department grew, and Joann moved on. The university partnered with Concur, as corporations do, forcing us to file our own travel reimbursements through this system. Fine, I thought, more work for me, but it can't be too bad. Rethinking the University in the Age of AI

Three years ago, I wrote a post titled "Getting schooled by AI, colleges must evolve" . I argued that as we entered the age of AI, the value of "knowing" was collapsing, and the value of "doing" was skyrocketing. (See Bloom's taxonomy. ) Today, that future has arrived. Entry-level hiring has stalled because AI agents absorb the small tasks where new graduates once learned the craft. So how do we prepare students for this reality? Not only do I stand by my original advice, I am doubling down. Surviving this shift requires more than minor curriculum tweaks; it requires a different philosophy of education. I find two old ideas worth reviving: a systems design mindset that emphasizes holistic foundations , and alternative education philosophies of the 1960s that give students real agency and real responsibility. The Agentic Self: Parallels Between AI and Self-Improvement

2025 was the year of the agent. The goalposts for AGI shifted; we stopped asking AI to merely "talk" and demanded that it "act". As an outsider looking at the architecture of these new agents and agentic system, I noticed something strange. The engineering tricks used to make AI smarter felt oddly familiar. They read less like computer science and more like … self-help advice . The secret to agentic intelligence seems to lie in three very human habits: writing things down, talking to yourself, and pretending to be someone else. They are almost too simple. The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Writing One of the most profound pieces of advice I ever read as a PhD student came from Prof. Manuel Blum, a Turing Award winner. Optimize for momentum

Progress comes from motion.  Momentum is the invisible engine of any significant work. A project feels daunting when you face it as a blank page. It feels easier when you built some momentum with some next steps. So, momentum makes the difference between blocked and flowing. Think of a stalled truck on a desert road. You can't lift it with superhuman strength. But by rocking it with small periodic forces at the right rhythm (matching its natural frequency) you can get it rolling. Each tiny push adds to the previous one because the timing aligns with the system's response. The truck starts to move, and then the engine catches. Projects behave the same way. A big project has its own rhythm. If you revisit it daily, even briefly, your pushes line up. Your brain stays warm. Context stays loaded . Ideas from yesterday are still alive today. Each session amplifies the last because you are operating in phase with your own momentum. When you produce something every day, you never feel...

This week, Aleksey and I met not to dissect a research paper, but to chat about "the process of PhD". I had recently wrote a post titled "The Invisible Curriculum of Research" , where I framed research as an iceberg, with the small visible parts (papers, conferences) resting on the hidden 5 Cs: Curiosity/Taste: what problems are worth solving. Clarity: how to ask precise and abstracting questions. Craft: writing, experimentation, presentation. Community: collaboration and contribution. Courage: resilience through setbacks. The Invisible Curriculum of Research

Courses, textbooks, and papers provide the formal curriculum of research. But there is also an invisible curriculum. Unwritten rules and skills separate the best researchers from the rest. I did get an early education on this thanks to my advisor, Anish . He kept mentioning "taste", calling some of my observations and algorithms "cute", and encouring me to be more curious and creative and to develop my "taste".  Slowly, I realized that what really shapes a research career isn't written in any textbook or taught in any course. You learn it by osmosis from mentors, and through missteps: working on the wrong problem, asking shallow questions, botching a project, giving up too soon. But if you can absorb these lessons faster, you will find research more fulfilling. The visible curriculum teaches you how to build a car. The invisible curriculum teaches you where to go, who to ride with, and how to keep going when the road turns uphill. After 25 years of exp...

What I'd do as a College Freshman in 2025

Do Computer Science Absolutely. Still would. Many are spooked by LLMs. Some, like Jensen Huang, argue that "nobody has to learn how to program."   I argue the opposite . And I double down.  Being supported by AI tools is not a substitute for mastery . You can’t borrow skills. You have to earn them.   Computer science builds vital skills : hacking, debugging, abstract thinking, and quick adaptation. These don’t go out of style.   Do STEM. It’s LLM-resistant. LLMs can retrieve and remix information, but do you know what to do with them? Like the dog chasing the car, what now? STEM teaches you that. It teaches you to think, to reason, to act. It gets you from information to wisdom. But only after you've mastered the foundations. We're heading into the age of Ï€-shaped people: depth in two areas, and generalist across . Building depth first, and then ranging is good strategy .   So yes, I would learn the foundations of both CS and AI. And then do AI + X, where X is s...

My Time at MIT

Twenty years ago, in 2004-2005, I spent a year at MIT’s Computer Science department as a postdoc working with Professor Nancy Lynch. It was an extraordinary experience. Life at MIT felt like paradise, and leaving felt like being cast out. MIT Culture MIT’s Stata Center was the best CS building in the world at the time. Designed by Frank Gehry, it was a striking abstract architecture masterpiece ( although like all abstractions it was a bit leaky ). Furniture from Herman Miller complemented this design. I remember seeing price tags of $400 on simple yellow chairs. The building buzzed with activity.  Every two weeks, postdocs were invited to the faculty lunch on Thursdays, and alternating weeks we had group lunches. Free food seemed to materialize somewhere in the building almost daily, and the food trucks outside were also good. MIT thrived on constant research discussions, collaborations, and talks. Advice to the young

I notice I haven't written any advice posts recently. Here is a collection of my advice posts pre 2020. I've been feeling all this elderly wisdom pent up in me, ready to pour at any moment. So here it goes. Get ready to quench your thirst from my fount of wisdom. No man, think for yourself, only get what works for you. It is called foundations, not theory Foundations of computer science (or rather any field of study) are the most important topics you can learn. These lay down the frame of thinking/perspective for that area of study. Yet, I am saddened to hear these called as "theory", and labeled as "unpractical". This couldn't be farther from the truth. Take a look at how I recommend studying distributed systems . Don't you dare call this "theory" and "unpractical". This lays the bedrock that you build your practice on. Don't skimp on the foundations. Don't build your home on quicksand. Keep your hands dirty, your mind cl...

Getting schooled by AI, colleges must evolve

As we enter the age of AI, it becomes more important for knowledge workers to excel in their strengths, and aim big for some strikes instead of settling for a comfortable average all around. How can colleges reform to endow graduates better? Here are my opinions, for what they are worth. Human skills for the AI era In the age of AI, doing rather than knowing becomes more important. Shallow information is worthless, but mastery of principles, critical thinking, and synthesis is priceless. Colleges should teach collaboration, entrepreneurship/innovation, communication/writing, and critical thinking and problem solving skills. How can colleges reform to cultivate these skills? First, they should transition from zero-sum mentality to the win-win mentality. This is not easy, because the system has been built on making students compete against each other and stack-ranking them. Your attitude determines your success

This may sound like a cliche your dad used to tell, but after many years of going through new areas, ventures, and careers, I find this to be the most underrated career advice. This is the number one advice I would like my kids to internalize as they grow up. This is the most important idea I would like every one undertaking a new venture to know.  If you think you are not good enough, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you think you are not enjoying something, you start to hate it.  I gave examples of this several times before. Let's suffice with this one : In graduate school, I had read "Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution" from Steven Levy and enjoyed it a lot. (I still keep the dog eared paper copy with affection.) So, I should have read Steven Levy's Crypto book a long time ago. But for some reason, I didn't...even though I was aware of the book. Trial and error

Like many of you I watched The Queen's Gambit and loved it. The settings of scenery and decors in 1960s were mesmerizing.   And like many of you, this rekindled the interest for chess in me. Growing up, I didn't play chess much, but my younger brother got into it as a middle school student. He bought books detailing chess games and studied them. He got a city-wide championship and such. I didn't get much into it, because I guess I didn't think of it as a serious enterprise and didn't want to expend too much energy into it.  I had this Android chess app on my phone, and I started playing with that instead of my downtime Sudoku playing . In this chess app, it is very easy to undo moves, and try other moves. I play against the machine, and yes undoing is cheating, but I use it a lot to explore different scenarios at critical points in the game. I have been very surprised about how much this accelerated my chess learning. I was able to make progress through several har...

Wow! I had written more than 30 advice posts over the last decade.  When I was writing them, I was hoping to first help myself. You see, I understand a concept well only after I think about it in depth, distill it to a small set of principles, and connect it with my existing knowledge-base. What Pasha taught me about life

Pasha joined our family when he was barely 2 months old. Shortly after that the Covid-19 quarantine started, and we have spent our lives 24/7 with Pasha. Pasha adopted our family on Thursday night. On the advisor-mentee relationship

I had previously given advice about how to find your advisor . But I realize I haven't talked about the advisor-mentee relationship directly before. The advisor is the window through which the student gets to perceive research and academia from. Advisors imprint the students with their approach to research, taste in research problems, perspective on solutions. Advisors also act as role models to the students in a more general sense. I see that the advisor's qualities often live on the student for a long time --at least through the assistant professorship period. For example, if the advisor is kind and generous to students, the mentee is nice to students, etc. This is a big responsibility for the advisors, and they should be aware of their roles in their interactions with their mentees. The advisor's main job is to ask questions and guide strategically where and when it matters. Acting as the leader, the advisor should provide purpose, give direction, and occasionally mo...

On becoming a researcher

I remember the first semester I joined THE Ohio State University as a graduate student, Spring 1998. I had taken Anish Arora's class on distributed systems, and I fell in love with distributed algorithms. The emergence of order out of chaotic (distributed/concurrent) execution was intellectually challenging and was very exciting to me. The way Anish taught was also very engaging, and I got drawn into trying the algorithms he mentioned in the class. He taught about the Dijkstra-Safra algorithm which performed termination detection in a ring with 3 rotations of the token. I thought it should be possible to improve on the 3 rounds required for completion, if we kept track of more information at the token. I mentioned this to Anish after the class, and he told me to give it a try. I started working on it. I was also taking English as A Second Language writing class that semester. So I wrote a technical report on this improved version of the Termination Detection algorithm. (We ended up...

My Emacs journey

This is a follow up to my "Master your tools" post . As an example of one of my tools, I talk about my Emacs use. I have been using Emacs for the last 20 years. At this point, I don't even know Emacs, my fingers do. If you ask me the shortcut for something, I will need to let my fingers do it and try to observe what they are doing. And sometimes ---as in the story of the caterpillar who forgets how to walk when asked to demonstrate it--- I forget about how to do something when I try to attempt it consciously.
